Georgia Tech Engineer ➡ Goldman Sachs Investment Banker ➡ Presenter & Host
I wouldn’t be surprised if this trajectory baffles you; but, there is some method in my madness. Allow me to elucidate.
While serving clients in the financial services industry as a Technology Consulting Intern at PwC in New York in 2014, I got exposed to the field of Finance, which I very quickly began to find a lot more riveting than Engineering.
This led me to embark upon a mission to be the next wolf of Wall Street. As such, upon returning to college after my internship, I started to burn the candle at both ends in a bid to secure coveted full-time Finance roles.
The blood, sweat, and tears bore fruit in the form of an offer to work at Goldman Sachs in New York after college.
Two years into my time at Goldman, owing to enhanced self-awareness, it began to dawn on me that the real reason as to why I had wanted to be an Investment Banker was the vanity associated with being one i.e. I was drawn to the sexy title of “Investment Banker” more than I was drawn to the work that came with that title.
Around the time that I was grappling with this epiphany, I learnt that I hadn’t gotten the luck of the draw in the H-1B visa lottery, which meant that I had to leave the US. Instead of viewing this as a setback, I looked at it as an opportune time to part ways with Banking and pivot to a profession that was in my wheelhouse.
I moved back to India and, after a few months spent soul-searching, had an “aha” moment whereby I decided to become a Sports Presenter as I felt that that role would serve as a happy marriage between my biggest strength (my communication skills) and my biggest interest (sports).
Without any formal media degree or prior experience, I successfully auditioned to land a presenting role with ESPNcricinfo during the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
Since that maiden stint, I have gained extensive experience as a presenter, commentator, and event host for major networks such as Star Sports, Sony Sports, and Cricbuzz, as well as for franchise teams like CSK and KKR, and brands like Coca-Cola, Thums Up, Unacademy, and MPL Sports, among others.
While I’ve covered a range of sports, Cricket has comprised the lion’s share of my work -- spanning multiple Team India series, the ODI and T20 World Cups, and the IPL, to name a few. My experience includes live broadcasts, PTC shoots, podcasts, meet-and-greets, fireside chats, and interviews.
P.S. I’m still waiting for my Mum to accept my decision to have quit my six-figure Investment Banking profession!
