I am an engineering leader, technologist, educator and lifelong New Yorker who recently relocated to New Haven, CT. My leadership style is open, flexible and inclusive, and I strive to lead by example by modeling best practices for my team. I believe in unleashing the latent creativity in my staff and have a strong track record for hiring diverse engineers who are smart, can get things done, and who contribute significant value to the organization. I love learning from my direct reports. After almost twenty years working in higher education, mental health, and startups I approach mentoring seriously, and believe that organizations have a responsibility to mentor their employees and encourage continual professional development. The key to successful management is honesty, integrity, trust, and authentic communication. I am deeply committed to advancing the role of technology in improving the human condition. In addition to 20+ years as an open-source software developer, I also have extensive experience managing projects and programmers. I am an active free/open source contributor and my technical interests include Algorithmic Fairness, Collaboration, GNU/Linux, Python, Content and Learning Management, Digital Video and Annotations. I love to bike ride, scuba dive, make things, take pictures, read/write non-fiction, travel, watch films, listen to music and play the bass.

A software developer with 20 years of Python experience. I founded and was Technical Director of a web development company specialising in content management systems and portals for 15 years. I have been an Open Source Software advocate, and the president of an international software foundation. More recently, I have been the lead of a globally distributed team of mobile developers building native iOS and Android apps for health, nutrition, and fitness tracking. I am a keen technologist and interested in the nuts and bolts of technology as well as the wider picture. I have spoken at many international conferences, and at my happiest when I am working as the glue between management / the board and the technical teams.
