I'm interested in how science becomes technology. My background is in physics and computing, and since the late ’90s, I’ve explored various aspects of Quantum Information Processing. I earned a PhD in the then newly formed Quantum Information and Computation Group at the University of Bristol, UK, under the supervision of Richard Jozsa. I also hold a degree in Philosophy (Logic) from the University of Florence, Italy. My postdoctoral research took me to the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) in Waterloo, Canada. Over the years, I have held research and faculty positions at institutions including UC Berkeley, the University of Cambridge, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Sorbonne Université. Before joining Amazon Web Services (AWS), I was a Professor of Physics of Information at University College London (UCL), where I helped establish Quantum Computing within the Computer Science Department and fostered industrial collaborations with companies such as Google, Lockheed Martin, and Siemens. At AWS, I contributed to launching Amazon Braket, the AWS Center for Quantum Computing (in partnership with Caltech), the AWS Center for Quantum Networking (in collaboration with Harvard), and the Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab. I co-founded Q&I and Phasecraft and played a role in advising some of the first quantum technology startups, including Cambridge Quantum Computing (now Quantinuum), where I was a Technical Co-Founder. I have also advised a number of private equity funds worldwide on quantum-related investments.
