I'm a software engineer based in Santa Barbara, California, with a passion for programming language theory and the design and implementation of complex but people-friendly systems. I've worked on everything from language design to safety-critical real-time operating-systems to cryptocurrency and distributed systems. I am currently a senior engineer at Espresso Systems, where I am leading the development of the first testnet of our layer 1 blockchain, bringing scalability and configurable privacy to web3. Before that, I helped develop the wallet and infrastructure for CAPE, a privacy solution for Ethereum. Previously, I worked for Green Hills Software, where I prototyped a new systems-level programming language with a focus on formal verification of safety-critical, low-level code. Also at Green Hills, I contributed to the INTEGRITY real-time kernel and improved the performance of the POSIX interface for INTEGRITY. In my free time, I work on silly "research" projects like bl:mp (https://github.com/jbearer/blimp), as well as making music and enjoying the natural beauty around the Central Coast.
