You've heard of "T-shaped" versus "I-shaped" people? I spend a lot of time trying to be ▮-shaped. Over the last few years I've moved out of core engineering flows, but somehow seem to always end up back in the thick of it. I'm comfortable leading or contributing to most parts of the software stack, from throwing Terraform and CloudFormation at cloudy problems to slinging around React and Svelte. And since I wrote the first half of this paragraph in something like 2015, I've accidentally become an audio/video engineer and produced large-scale conferences both in person and from the comfort of my office chair (because COVID was a thing). Over time I've moved from being a software developer to a product architect and leader, but that means I need to understand both the ten-thousand-foot view as well the view from the trenches. And all of this stuff is done by humans, and being able to play nice with others isn't optional. Keeping and balancing these different aspects of navigating a tech shop has put me in some pretty cool roles throughout my career, and I'm always looking for how I can grow and improve next.
