Business Insider AI 100 | Tech Research & Policy Leader | Interests: AI, Misinfo, Elections, Social Media, UX, Policy | Chancellor's Public Scholar @ UC Berkeley
As Chancellor's Public Scholar at UC Berkeley and faculty member at the Haas School of Business, I teach courses including AI Ethics for Leaders; Social Movements & Social Media; Civic Technology; and Scenario Planning. I have advised the White House, US Congress, European Union, United Nations, NATO, and California Legislature about tech policy. My writings and commentary have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, CNN, BBC, AP, Guardian, Bloomberg, and The Atlantic, among others. I was named to Business Insider’s AI 100 list in 2023. I am a researcher and advisor at a number of organizations working on technology policy. I am currently a Senior Policy Advisor at the California Initiative for Technology and Democracy (CITED), Senior Advisor, AI & Elections at the Brennan Center for Justice, Senior Research Fellow at the International Computer Science Institute, and Senior Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation. At Berkeley, I am an affiliated faculty member with the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS); Center for Latin American Studies; Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership (EGAL); and the Business and Public Policy Group. I previously worked as a Research Manager at Meta (formerly Facebook) on the Responsible AI (RAI), Civic Integrity and Social Impact teams. On the RAI team, I led a small group of qualitative and quantitative researchers focused on AI fairness, governance, and accountability. On Civic Integrity, I worked to stop attacks on activists, journalists and politicians using Meta’s platforms globally. I'm formally trained in sociology and specialize in methods including ethnography, in-depth interviews, aggregation of expert opinion, scenario planning, signals scanning, multi-stakeholder workshop facilitation and content analysis. I have developed long-term strategies and theories of change for a variety of organizations and product teams. As a Research Director at the Institute for the Future, I led research on the future of media, philanthropy, governance, international development and social movements. I studied at the University of São Paulo (M.S., Sociology) and UC Berkeley (B.A., Political Economy of Environment & Development). As a student, I was an intern at the White House Council on Environmental Quality and a Confidential Assistant at the Office of Management and Budget. In 2004, I founded the Global Lives Project, a network of people working to build a video library of daily life.
