I study how social, cultural, and relational factors influence economic decision making. Financialization and financial technologies shape and re-shape behaviors and worldviews about markets, investing, risk, and economic dispositions toward the future. I am particularly interested in the social and symbolic meaning attached to various financial locations such as the retirement account or college savings account, and I also look at the role of technology (FinTech, digital currencies, roboadvisors, etc.) in shaping financial decisions and attitudes. My work, therefore, tends to fall at the intersection of economic sociology and science & technology studies (STS). I'm also interested in Blockchain and cryptocurrencies as an empirical object and built an early (2014) pricing model for Bitcoin based on its cost of production. I am still interested in the moneyness of crypto (especially from a philosophical and sociological standpoint) but am now looking at the institution-making properties of smart contract platforms like Ethereum. I was a former derivatives trader for 15 years and worked briefly in private wealth management before turning to academia. I am also involved in digital currency and blockchain research and advocacy. I consult on digital currency & blockchain integration and I was an instructor for the University of Nicosia's MSc program in Digital Currencies and had a small RIA practice. I contribute frequently to Investopedia, writing about topics that interest me in finance, economics, and technology.
