Maria Eitel is the Founder of the NIKE Foundation and Founder and Chair Emeritus of the Girl Effect. The early work of Girl Effect envisioned and activated the idea that removing barriers and creating opportunities for adolescent girls unleashes their potential and improves not just a girl’s life, but that of their family, community and nation. The work of Girl Effect has reached some 23 million girls in poverty. Maria believes that safe, diverse and inclusive workplaces lead to stronger and more profitable businesses and unleash creativity. Maria was a long time NIKE Executive and joined the company as NIKE’s first Vice President of Corporate Responsibility in 1998. Maria pioneered the principles and programs across NIKE’s business that led the company from crisis to successful corporate citizenship. She played a key role in establishing industry standards of CSR. Prior to NIKE she was an executive at Microsoft, a Commissioned Officer at the White House and started her career as a journalist. Maria currently serves as a board director of Cloudflare and is on the Seattle Kraken Executive Committee. She is an advisor to the MIT Media Lab and the World Surfing League. She was recognized by Fast Company as part of their “League of Extraordinary Women.” She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from McGill University, Master’s Degree from Georgetown University and an Honorary Doctorate from Babson College. She divides her time between Seattle, the Bay Area and London.
