I am a Software Engineer with a passion for all things data and specialising in streaming technologies. I have been working in the Data Engineer space for the last 7 years and I have worked with pure streaming systems using Kafka and Kafka Streams to more traditional batch orientated systems using tools like Dataflow and Dataproc. In my current role I have built a data platform to index and decode the Ethereum network using GCP and Kafka. The data is being decoded in realtime and processed into streams where is it drained and used in multiple operational and analytical data stores in a Kappa style architecture. I have spent most of my career using Java but the last few years have been functional Scala but I love and learn all languages. I have experience with the following tech. From designing application architecture, developing POCs, building out event driven data services for production, all the way through to CI and CD pipelines and tooling, I’ve seen and done a lot over the past ten years in technology. I’ve worked as a developer, a senior developer, a tech lead, and a lead developer, & staff engineer, gaining experience and learning all the way through. I’ve been aware for a while is that what I really love to do is create really solid and forward-thinking architecture, investigate and appraise novel approaches, and solve the hard problems that nobody else can crack. I really believe that nothing is unsolvable, and I have the grit and determination to keep going when others have given up. There’s a solution for every problem, and normally more than one. I’m the person who loves getting called out for a really scary Sev 1 incident because I just love the challenge. I also really love building software in a collaborative way. I love white boarding ideas, coaching junior developers, giving constructive code reviews, and helping people develop the best solutions. I have strong opinions based on learned experience about how the technology and tools we use can be simple to work with, fast to prototype with, and easily transform an idea through to a prototype and on to a fast, reliable, and easily maintainable core service. I believe we can do all this simply and without excessive difficulty, cost, and mental overhead, and I’m excited whenever I have the opportunity to make this happen.. Javascript is where I’m most productive and I have been writing node.js for over a decade, following closely the huge changes that we’ve seen in that ecosystem, for example the adoption of TypeScript, the introduction of ES6 and so on. I’m a polyglot at heart though, and comfortable with Rust, Go, Python or whatever other language will deliver the best outcome for the problem at hand. I love exploring new technologies and learning new languages when possible and never do something in node because it’s easier, if there’s a better tool out there.
