In early 2018, I left my job at Google without a plan! After spending five years at Google as a Technical Recruiter in Silicon Valley, I knew I wanted a change, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do! After spending a little time traveling, I ended up moving to Maui. And the only thing I had figured out while traveling was that I wanted to work for myself, but I still didn’t know what I was going to do!
And then it happened, on October 9th in 2018, I watched a YouTube video with over 10 million views that gave horrible job interview advice. And I thought, I can do better than that video! I threw on a hat, went onto my windy deck in Maui and filmed an even worse video! I filmed 23 videos in October of 2018 and as you likely know, it blew up overnight.
Yah, not so much. Nobody watched besides my friends and family, and I had to beg them to do it.
But I quickly saw a huge need in the job space, and the more I watched and researched, the more I realized that everything sounded the same. And in many cases these videos were providing more bad advice than good advice. AND THEN IT HAPPENED! It was a really small thing, but my Program Manager video that I had published in late December hit the YouTube algorithm in late March 2019. And finally, a few people were watching.
People started asking for all things regarding their job search, but mostly they wanted interview and negotiation advice. And finally, Practice Interviews had a client base! And the more clients I coached, the more I learned and started to differentiate myself from others. As of 2025, I have conducted over 3000 1:1 interview / negotiation coaching sessions.
