As a Commercial Agronomy Analyst at Pivot Bio, I process and analyze agronomic data for the company's innovative microbial nitrogen solutions that enhance crop performance and reduce environmental impact. I'm a former tenure-track professor turned Risk and Trust & Safety policy specialist and strategist. My scholarship and academic work focused primarily on platform governance efforts and its effects on online communities, specifically social movements. In my academic work, I closely examined the ways that web infrastructure and the architecture were affecting the movements and activities of hate groups, and how users understand and navigate algorithmically driven platforms. Before transitioning into trust and safety work, I had a brief stint as a UX Researcher. I approach trust and safety work from a strategic standpoint with a sociotechnical systems lens that takes into account all of the internal and external complexities of digital spaces. I am deeply passionate about understanding issues from a micro, meso, and macro level, and am particularly interested in examining the cultural nuances and differences in approaching the governance of online communities, and how these differences impact the governance of emerging technologies.

Hi, I'm Sydney and I'm currently a backend software engineer at Twilio, working on Flex! I graduated from South Dakota State University in 2022 with my bachelor's in computer science, a minor in graphic design, and honors distinction. I am an optimistic person and I love to bring my ideas to life, which is why I found a passion for technology and design. While in college, I completed multiple software engineering internships, worked as a machine learning research assistant on campus, and started taking master's level courses during my last year.
