Welcome to my profile! Feel free to look around and send me a connection request or a note if you feel so moved.
A little about me. I’m into my third decade in advertising and marketing. Some might think that’s insane, but I wouldn’t choose any other career path (I did want to be a firefighter long ago but that’s a story for another day).
I spent the first half of my career working for several different ad agencies between Texas and Boston. I learned some valuable lessons from those experiences.
First, advertising was (and still is) a blend of art and science, which is what makes it so fun. The use of data and analytics is an important part of the decision-making process but it’s no substitute for creativity.
Second, I really enjoy helping clients solve complex business problems. When working agency side, I helped brands like Volkswagen, Subaru and Mastercard launch new products in crowded categories and improve sales and brand perception.
Third, I learned that relationships matter and treating people with respect goes a long way to building a successful career (and it’s the human thing to do).
I’ve leaned into each of these lessons as I transitioned by career to advertising and technology sales. I’ve never thought of sales as “selling” but more a process of helping your client solve a vexing problem or capitalize on an amazing opportunity. Further, much of my success in sales has come from the strong relationships that I’ve built over the years.
I like to think of my “family tree”. These are folks that I’ve worked with over the years who are now CMO’s, heads of agencies or CEO’s of tech companies that will take a meeting, give me advice or set me straight due to our strong relationship.
Now, I’m running my own consulting company, which has given me the freedom to work with old friends, enjoy a flexible work situation and live where I want to live. Currently, that’s living right on the water outside of Tampa, FL.
I can honestly say that I’m living my best life right now both personally and professionally.

In my consulting practice, I help growth companies with business, product, and technology strategy, and evaluate companies for investors and acquirers. I work closely with a small team of very senior Principal Engineers, who advise clients, and architect/deliver high-quality software (cloud, data engineering, and ML solutions) on aggressive timelines.
My most recent clients have been the Chief Digital Officer of Toyota (2.5 years), and the CEO of Indeed (2 years). I also help manage the VC fund at Austin's Capital Factory, the center of gravity for entrepreneurs in Texas.
One of my main focus areas over the past few years has been AI, data, and machine learning. I love Austin, people, ideas, and technology, and I'm passionate about connecting innovators and fast-growing markets to help build great companies.
My bio says: Multidisciplined executive with 30+ years' experience in technology and business strategy; venture capital; media online. Technical visionary; adept at communicating diverse technical and business topics to non-technical audiences; thorough grounding in digital content and marking, machine learning, and Internet technologies.
Trivia: I registered the world's first newspaper domain name (chron.com) in 1988.
LinkedIn members: I find LinkedIn to be more useful when I only accept connection requests from people I have met, or those referred by people I already know. If we haven't met and I don't respond to your request, please don't take it personally!
Ian Clarke is a Computer Scientist and Entrepreneur and a pioneer in distributed systems, cryptography, and artificial intelligence.
Ian designed Freenet, the world's first decentralized peer-to-peer network. Freenet pioneered concepts like cryptographic contracts and small-world networks, Ian's paper describing Freenet was one of the most cited computer science papers of 2000.
In addition to his work on Freenet, Ian created a number of other ventures. These include Revver, an early online video website that shares revenue with creators, Renegade, a machine learning algorithm fine-tuned for small datasets, and OneSpot, an online advertising company.
In 2021, motivated by the increasing centralization of the internet, Ian started work on a new Freenet — a drop-in decentralized replacement for the world wide web.
This new Freenet allows developers to create decentralized alternatives to centralized services, including messaging, social media, email, and e-commerce.
