Over the last 27 years, it has been my privilege & passion to start, fund & run companies, sharing my experience with others along the way. It has always been very personally satisfying to help business owners, executives, startup founders & students to improve their entrepreneurial plans, businesses, outlooks or strategies.
My career has had a frequent focus on cyber security. Going back to my time as a U.S. Navy Officer where I was introduced to communications security, management and intelligence; to co-inventing Intellishield™, a pioneer IT security product which was later acquired by Cisco Systems; co-founding NexDefense, a software company focused on the specific security needs of industrial control systems (ICS) asset owners.
I've enjoyed professionally speaking for many years: keynotes, workshops and guest lectures on a variety of topics. As a speaker, I often draw from my decades of experience as an entrepreneur, business owner and my work in the cyber security industry to share interesting yet relevant stories with my audiences. It is my goal to make a meaningful impact with every interaction. Learn more at my website DerekHarp.com.
One of the things I’m most proud of is my cyber workforce development efforts through co-founding the GICSP Certification and the non-profit, Control Systems Cyber Security Association International - (CS)²AI. I have always believed that if we obtain insight, opportunities & success in life, then we have some duty to give back. It is not one 3rd party’s job (Government, for example) to solve all the cyber security problems we face; the truth is it is all our collective responsibilities. (CS)²AI is contributing to the solution by creating opportunities for local peer groups of individuals charged with protecting our most critical cyber to physical systems.

Einstein once claimed, “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious". In that respect, I have something in common with the famous physicist. Interest and passion led me to take up Geology.
A professional field geologist & an ecohydrologist with 15+ years of experience in aquifer and groundwater management, ecohydrology, and groundwater resource vulnerability mapping, with a regional focus on arid and forested ecosystems. Being a 4-dimensional thinker and passionate about freshwater ecosystem conservation, my main research interest lies in hydrogeology, ecology and freshwater ecosystem health, groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs), stable isotopes, geo-cognition, geoscience education, geoethics, geological hazards and physical volcanology.
I work at the intersection of Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems, Indigenous (native) communities and Geo-cognitive mental models to address water security & related risks. My aim is to deconstruct science & bridge gaps that exist between field realties and policy for effective management of common pool resource. My overall goal is to work with less privileged communities and work towards using my research rigour to help communities take ecologically sound paths in restoring their ecosystems.
I am inclined towards working outdoors in the field, love to engage in inter & trans disciplinary research, able to design research projects, bridge gaps between science and society, develop new knowledge for making smart decisions, and keen on using different tools to effectively communicate research findings to people at large. I am always buzzing with new ideas, have a creative outlook and committed towards working for vulnerable ecosystems & rural (indigenous) communities.
I always look towards gaining new experiences and opportunities to demonstrate and share my skills. I consider myself as a lifelong student, experiential educator & a collaborative researcher who is open to learn from diverse stakeholders (whether it is a villager or a scientist) to enhance my understanding and passion for Earth Science.
Currently, I am pursuing my PhD in Hydrogeology from Miami University, Oxford, OH
Apart from being a student, I am an ardent countryside trekker, reader, blogger, photographer, flora & fauna observer and a cycling enthusiast.
