To bring projects to successful conclusions, some days an experienced scientist needs to be the technical specialist and on others the team leader or project champion. Over my career, I have regularly been in these positions, sometimes in all three in the same day, on projects within the immunology, oncology and fibrosis disciplines. I now am harnessing these skills as the lead scientist in BioMarin's Flow Cytometry Core. I've always been the cytometry expert on the team, and now have developed it into the central focus in my career. BioMarin is a great place to work with a culture of enthusiasm and a genuine passion for treating rare genetic diseases in diverse areas including the neurobiology, cardiology, and enzyme replacement therapeutic areas.
I love leading the Cytometry team and teaching others researchers at BioMarin about how they can use cytometry applications in their projects. With my colleagues in other technology areas, We've built a new Core Technology department and its has been one of the most exciting career opportunities I've had the pleasure of taking on. Our core now boasts four cytometry analyzers from a BD FACSCanto, to a Cytek Aurora and a pair of sorters: a Invitrogen Bigfoot and a Miltenyi Tyto. My team of three researchers assists researchers throughout Research and Early Development, from the earliest discovery projects up into building clinical assays, lending my expertise in cytometry and together moving their projects forward in the pipeline. We practice a deep integrative model and work with projects teams placing our cytometry experts on the team to help bridge the gap between biological understanding and technical expertise.
