As the CDO of Sony Pictures Entertainment since 2014, Paul Martin has driven creative DEI solutions across industry verticals globally and sits on multiple boards and foundations that continue to advance DEI across the business. Throughout his career, Martin has moved the needle in creating pathways for careers in entertainment and is dedicated to building a sustainable, inclusive workplace that mitigates unconscious bias beyond traditional diversity headcount. At Sony Pictures, Martin has piloted and launched global programs that leverage the company’s vast talent and corporate brand portfolio. Among them, the Sony Pictures Action Council, a multi-pronged racial equity and inclusion initiative, has successfully integrated DEI into every aspect of Sony’s business including hiring, retention, talent pipelines, supplier diversity, employee inclusion, content, and media and talent partnerships. Martin has also piloted and developed several cost-effective supplier diversity programs and diverse director and writer programs featuring women and underrepresented communities. Martin’s deep knowledge of the industry talent ecosystem makes him particularly adept at structuring and negotiating partnership agreements with top organizations, and in sourcing and integrating underrepresented creative talent. Martin is a Non-Executive Director with several institutions, including The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, Promax/BDA, Hollywood CPR, Genesis Accel, and RespectAbility. He is also a Founding member of the Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) Chief Diversity Officers Board, and a Founding member of the Chief Diversity Officer Board Power Circle. Recent honors include a Governor’s appointment to California’s ScholarShare Investment Board, which oversees the state’s 529 college investment plan; honored by the African American Film Critics Association, the California Diversity Council, and the Walter Kaitz Foundation. Recipient of the Diversity Vanguard Award for achievements in Diversity & Inclusion; three-time recipient of Sony’s HR Compass Award – Sony Corporate’s highest annual award given for high-impact programs. Two-time recipient of the Multicultural Leadership Award for excellence in the field given by the California Diversity Council, an affiliate of the National Diversity Council. Recipient of NAMIC’s (National Association of Minorities in Communication) Leadership in Mentoring. Martin has been recognized as one of the top diversity executives in the country by Variety and Black Enterprise Magazines.

I’m a storyteller. I like cheerful stories, sad stories, stories you can tap your feet to and even ones that make you buy things that you really don’t need. I know how to make a scene sing, whimper or shock. I understand the power of sound and space, and if what we need are 5 frames or a 3 minute take. I’ve worn a lot of hats during my career. Most recently I’ve been concentrating on my editorial efforts. As an editor, I’ve worked independently, supervised staffs of editors, and written and produced projects. I’ve crafted episodes, features, short films, commercials and promos. What ties every project together? Attention to detail, taste, timing, sensitivity, technical proficiency and stamina.
