Tara Mooney is a skilled leader, a trusted advisor, and an experienced litigator. Since becoming an attorney in 2002, she has successfully litigated thousands of cases, acting as counsel in 61 jury trials and over 1,000 bench trials. She has practiced both civil and criminal law. Tara has litigated cases including murder, rape, armed robbery, drug distribution, aggravated malicious wounding, abduction, arson, fraud, embezzlement, child abuse, domestic violence, firearms offenses, manslaughter, felony driving under the influence, and aggravated sexual battery. Tara’s career achievements include first-chair prosecution of Christopher Ellis, with jury convictions of first degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding, overcoming not guilty by reason of insanity plea. Tara successfully prosecuted Michael Maldini, a former Arlington County police officer and U.S. Marine Officer Reservist for the rape of his direct report, a subordinate U.S. Marine Reservist. Tara’s prosecution resulted in jury convictions for rape, attempted sodomy and aggravated sexual battery. Tara led the violent crime unit and the juvenile justice unit as Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney, in Prince William County, the second most populous county in Virginia. Tara has served both as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney and an Assistant County Attorney for Fairfax County, the most populous county in Virginia. Tara has served under four elected Commonwealth’s Attorneys in Virginia. She has mentored and trained numerous attorneys over the course of her career. Tara believes in service. Before entering law school, Tara devoted a year to serving in Notre Dame-AmeriCorps, volunteering in a nonprofit community law center, serving the working poor, in a largely immigrant community. Tara went on to serve on the Board of Directors for the international service organization in which she served, Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, a nonprofit organization with a multi-million dollar budget. The Fairfax County Park Foundation honored Tara with the Eakin Philanthropy Award for organizing, fundraising and building a community playground. Virginia Lawyers Weekly honored Tara with their Influential Women of Law award given to outstanding women lawyers and judges who make a difference in the legal profession. Tara is licensed to practice law in Virginia and the District of Columbia, and admitted to practice in the Eastern District of Virginia and Fourth Circuit U. S. Court of Appeals.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland, a Masters in Forensic Science degree from George Washington University and has completed additional post-graduate study at the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins School of Management.
