After a great 4 years at MongoDB, and an amazing 40 years as a software engineer, I've now retired!
I graduated from Bristol Uni in the UK in 1985 and spent the northern summer doing underwater archaeology in Sicily, scuba diving on Roman shipwrecks, before joining Inmos to build software development tools for Transputers (Inmos’ parallel processing CPUs). In 1993, Fran and I migrated to Australia, and I joined CiSRA (Canon’s Sydney R&D lab), where I witnessed the birth of digital cameras amongst many other amazing things. After a brief stint at an OO database company (Bullant) I rejoined CiSRA to develop internet printing tools and game-changing image processing. NiCTA/Data61 was next, where I worked first on vehicle route optimization and then on privacy preserving data sharing for the Australian government before joining MongoDB to lead one of the teams developing MongoDB’s WiredTiger storage engine. Thank you to everyone who’s been on some part of that journey with me – what a ride!
With apologies to Blade Runner, I’ll finish by misquoting Rutger Hauer’s “Tears in the rain”:
“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Digital cameras on fire of the shoulder of Orion. I watched nosql databases glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to retire.”
I’m a digital growth executive and entrepreneur and have developed and launched > 170 new digital products for corporates and helped > 90 new startup businesses grow and/or scale.
My experience spans strategy, digital product management / development, innovation, corporate development and executive leadership (P&L $100m+, team sizes >150 people) and ~$400m+ of additional value has been created through my work in corporate, government and startup environments.
I’ve launched and run my own businesses and have also invested in a number of successful high growth tech. startups across Fintech, Data and Digital on behalf of prominent Venture Capital and Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) firms as well as through my own entities.
In the past few years, I have been heavily involved in both Open Banking (Consumer Data Right in Australia) and in Data sharing within Financial Services more broadly. This has had me work with some of the largest global and domestic banks and insurers on data sharing projects as well as both advocating for and working with the emerging field of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) that allow data collaborations to be undertaken safely, securely and in a fully privacy preserving manner.
I'm also an advisor to government departments of 3 separate countries on the topics of Fintech, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and the commercialisation of "deep-tech”. For example, as part of the work we have done with the CSIRO entrepreneurship program and other publicly funded research groups in Australia, 60+ new high-growth companies have been created alone.
