My life and career have been anything but “typical.”
In my early 20s, I played poker professionally and was ranked as one of the top 100 online tournament players in the world.
In 2011, the DOJ indicted the two most prominent online poker sites (PokerStars & Full Tilt) for tax evasion, money laundering and wire fraud — making it illegal for US citizens (the largest poker market) to play online.
This inflection point changed my path.
I decided it was time to move on from the poker world…
I didn’t have much direction then and had the blessing and curse of having a bunch of money to my name.
But after a period of stagnation, I took a leap of faith in becoming an office leasing broker after some friends and family convinced me that my people skills, analytical capabilities, and risk tolerance (all things I honed as a poker player) would be well suited to the job.
And that’s what I’ve done for the last 11 years — it’s been quite a ride.
I’ve been part of thousands of office lease negotiations amounting to more than 6MM square feet of leasing on behalf of some of the largest companies in the world and the coworking sector.
More recently, I decided that I wanted to be part of the platforms that will support distributed work at scale, so I joined a kick ass start-up called Kadence.
In addition to my “day job,” I am also an online writer and have become a leading voice on the Future of Work — venturing into subjects that go well beyond the office.
The experience of becoming a daily writer on LinkedIn has truly changed my life in ways I could have never imagined.
On the personal front, Covid changed EVERYTHING for me.
Early on, I realized that I had locked the door and thrown away the key to a past version of myself, a digital native (that’s what I was as a poker player without knowing it).
Being thrust into a remote world made me reconnect with this version of myself, and I then “blended” him with corporate me.
The result has been a somewhat “iconoclastic” take on the future of the office market (others words, not mine) and a bizarre cocktail of expansion, ego shedding, and returning to my childlike self.
I used to live in Toronto, Canada, but now I live on Prince Edward Island (both an island AND Canada’s smallest province) with my wife and daughter.
I believe the Future of Work is Distributed by Default, and I believe Distributed Work distributes opportunities more evenly.
On here, you can find me talking about different ways to live and work.
I hope you’ll join in on the conversation!
