I completed a PhD in the field of computer networks and distributed systems, and after that have worked in High Performance Computing (HPC) and more recently Data and AI. I was a member of the Parallel Programming Lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for 4+ years, where I was a Research Scientist. I am the author of Charm4py (github.com/UIUC-PPL/charm4py), a parallel programming system and runtime for Python -built on top of a C++ framework- that scales to clusters of thousands of nodes. Charm4py has 290 stars on GitHub as of Sep 2024. I joined Bodo.ai in 2019 as Director of Engineering to develop a large-scale data analytics platform and C++ distributed query engine that achieved world-class performance, bridging the simplicity of Python with the performance and scalability of HPC. In 2022 I joined Modular where I worked on several aspects of the modern AI stack (frameworks and compiler, model serving at scale), and more recently contribute to Voltron Data's query engine and enterprise product. Passionate about HPC and computing at scale (particularly in the big data and AI domains), programmer productivity, parallel computing and algorithms, collective communication algorithms, performance and scaling, asynchronous runtime systems, high-performance networks and interconnects, building quality software. Lu Zhang, Founder and Managing Partner of Fusion Fund, is a Silicon Valley-based investor, a serial entrepreneur, and a Stanford Engineering alumna. Skilled in Python, Go, C and data analysis” Most people reading the summary session have in mind the question “why do I or my company need this person?” or some of its variations such as “is making connection with him/her gonna worth my while?” For me, the above LinkedIn-generated description is not a good enough answer. I’m trying to flip this question a little bit here, by telling you the reason why I NEED YOU and the organization you’re a part of. I know I’m running the risk of appearing ignorant and rude, but hey, if you haven’t left my profile yet, I might as well hit the jackpot. I need you because I want to fulfill my obligation as a millennial, born on the greatest pedestal supported by the accumulation of all previous knowledge and arts, to enrich our heritage as human beings. I need you because I want to prove Gyges wrong, that after two thousand years, we are able to foster justice and equality in some the largest organizations ever created. I need you because I want to make Thoreau disbelieve at what we’ve accomplished under his motto, “simplicity, simplicity, simplicity.” I need you because I want to let Carl Sagan rest assure that the generation after him has yet to forget to explore our inescapable perspective in the Cosmos. I need you because I want to carry on Randy Pausch’s dream to enable the dreams of others with aspiration and perseverance. I need you because I want a chance to contribute to something that is greater than me, a chance to be a player in an infinite game that’s on the horizon of my life as a finite game. All of the above cannot be accomplished if breathing, thinking human beings like you and I are not connected by our common dreams. I would like to apologize if I’ve wasted your time since I wrote a bunch of irrelevant and perhaps incoherent stuffs. But by now you should’ve known me better than just a little while ago.
