I believe business is a platform for doing good in the world; so, I'm trying to build and scale as many great companies as possible. My goal is to create a group of successful businesses that sustain beyond my death. Think about the impact that could have on the people I work with and the communities where we operate.
The only real skill I have in life is that I know what a high performing team feels like. I've had the privilege of starting multiple businesses from scratch that have grown beyond my wildest imagination. I've also been able to buy and scale companies using the same formula. I get great satisfaction in building great teams and setting them up for long-term success.
I began investing as a teenager in the booming stock market of the 1990's then lost all of my money in the subsequent tech bubble of the early 2000's. I got into real estate in college when I bought my first 10+ properties using lease-options and seller financing because I didn't have a job or any money. I flipped 100+ properties in 2009-2011 and started a construction company when housing starts hit their all-time low in 2011.
I have purchased over $1 billion in real estate and own/manage a portfolio that is nearly $750 million. Now I spend my time scaling our current businesses, starting new, adjacent businesses, and buying and scaling companies in diverse industries.
I'm a bit of a non-conformist. I have always struggled with authority, and I'm wired to do things my own way. I hate anything “conventional” or "status quo." I feel like I'm playing a different game, by a different set of rules. I measure success in a different way.
I feel alive when I'm in the struggle of doing business. I love learning by doing and experimentation. I don't mind trying and failing. I'm always looking for the next challenge for me and my teams.
Everything good in my life has come through partnerships with others. I started life with my twin sister, and I got used to sharing and having a built-in partner to do everything. Now I'm all about finding the next person to collaborate with to create another business engine (a group of synergistic businesses).
I’m grateful for my key partner in life, my wife Kim. We’ve known each other since we were 3. We have six amazing children and spend our time skiing, hiking, camping, whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, and doing activities together as a family from our hometown, Boise, Idaho.
